When we’ve managed to move the World YoYo Contest from the USA to Prague in 2014 a problem with where to host the next competition arose. An unwritten rule was established stating that the WYYC is going to circulate between Europe, Asia and USA. So after contests in Prague, Tokyo and Cleveland we’re back to Europe next year – Iceland 2017! The host country for the year 2018 was announced in Cleveland last week as well – after a couple of months of debating and arguing the IYYF decided that the 2018 World YoYo Contest is going to happen in Shanghai, China!
This decision is a bit controversial (those who know me have the idea what my opinion of Chinese government is) but there’s a lot of positives in this. Everyone probably suspects that 98% of yoyos are manufactured in China, but what many people do not know (thanks to the language and digital barrier) is that China probably has the largest number of yoyo players in the world. It’s widely anticipated that (if the qualification system is going to remain the same) there’s going to be around 1000 people competing at this contest (people joining the contest, not just spectators). This would be an all time record which i can’t see anyone beating anytime soon. Just to compare – Prague had around 200 competitors in 2014. And thanks to Taka from SpinGear we also have a pretty good idea that the local organisation – CYYC (China YoYo Corporation) will handle the task as it should. Just look at the photos bellow – massive stage with well known sponsors, gigantic ads in public spaces, medals which are actually working yoyos…!
Apart from the obvious points above (and few more) there’s also the thing that we’ll be giving the Chinese players a chance to meet their heroes – well known yoyo players from all over the world. At this moment the average Chinese yoyo player has to go through massive obstacles (thanks the the great Chinese firewall) just to read Facebook updates from various yoyo people or companies. Just imagine how happy the IYYF just made yoyo players all over China! That alone is a reason to host the WYYC in Shanghai!
For those of you thinking about going to China, it’s much easier than you think. Most European countries need visas with an invitation letter from someone in China (probably CYYC). So just ask your local yoyo association to help you out with that (or us if you don’t have one, we’ll happily give you a hand). The flights from Europe are very often much cheaper than those to the USA and i am not even mentioning living costs in China compared to the ones in the West. We recommend sorting out the visas at least 2 or 3 months in advance. Just to be sure.IYYF elections:
